Chapter Twenty-Five

Emiko paced back and forth across the common room. From the sunken U-shaped sofa to the kitchen and back, then back and forth again.

“Fucking hell, I can’t just stay here and do nothing.” She clenched her fists at her side as heat rose up her face. “I can’t believe I just let Hwicce leave B behind. She’s….” Her words trailed off as she stopped and scrunched up her face.

What was B to her? She put a hand over her heart and sighed. B was someone she hadn’t expected to meet, and she could be everything. Her place could be here with B. She surveyed the untended garden space and let her eyes land on the door to her apartment.

“And here I am doing nothing.”

“What do you mean, doing nothing?” a male voice said behind her.

Emiko spun around. Max, the engineer, stood in the open door to the hall. He smiled at her, a smile that contained hints of a sneer.

“Is that what you do? Lurk?”

He shrugged. “This is the common room; I have every right to come in here.”

“Don’t you have engines to check? We’ll be leaving at any minute.”

“Why are you stomping about talking to yourself?”

She snorted and looked him up and down. The green hues of his skin looked out of place. “None of your damn business.”

“Right then, your majesty, I’ll grab my snack and get out of your hair.” Max sauntered into the kitchen and started rooting through the cupboards.

Emiko glanced back at the door to the apartment she’d selected. All she had to do now was invite B to share it with her. At the thought, her heart raced. It was a bold move, living together—especially since they’d only known each other for a few days.

“By the way, if you’re really doing nothing, I could use a hand—assuming you’ll lower yourself to get your hands dirty,” Max said from the kitchen. “Also, I saw cookies in the supplies. Where’d they get stashed?”

Emiko took a step towards him. He was the ship’s engineer—a role she’d always pictured taking on, especially since she’d left Indigo Station. If there really was a place for her on this ship, she should make sure she could be useful.

“They’re in the top right cupboard,” she said.

He opened that cupboard, and a box of cookies fell out and hit him on the head. “Ah, excellent!” He picked up the package and turned towards her without bothering to close the cupboard door.

He met her gaze and raised an eyebrow. “So, are you coming with me or what?”

“Sure,” she said.

With a curt nod, Max left the common room and headed aft. Emiko followed.
