Chapter Twenty-Five
Emiko paced back and forth across the common room. From the sunken U-shaped sofa to the kitchen and back, then back and forth again.
âFucking hell, I canât just stay here and do nothing.â She clenched her fists at her side as heat rose up her face. âI canât believe I just let Hwicce leave B behind. Sheâsâ¦.â Her words trailed off as she stopped and scrunched up her face.
What was B to her? She put a hand over her heart and sighed. B was someone she hadnât expected to meet, and she could be everything. Her place could be here with B. She surveyed the untended garden space and let her eyes land on the door to her apartment.
âAnd here I am doing nothing.â
âWhat do you mean, doing nothing?â a male voice said behind her.
Emiko spun around. Max, the engineer, stood in the open door to the hall. He smiled at her, a smile that contained hints of a sneer.
âIs that what you do? Lurk?â
He shrugged. âThis is the common room; I have every right to come in here.â
âDonât you have engines to check? Weâll be leaving at any minute.â
âWhy are you stomping about talking to yourself?â
She snorted and looked him up and down. The green hues of his skin looked out of place. âNone of your damn business.â
âRight then, your majesty, Iâll grab my snack and get out of your hair.â Max sauntered into the kitchen and started rooting through the cupboards.
Emiko glanced back at the door to the apartment sheâd selected. All she had to do now was invite B to share it with her. At the thought, her heart raced. It was a bold move, living togetherâespecially since theyâd only known each other for a few days.
âBy the way, if youâre really doing nothing, I could use a handâassuming youâll lower yourself to get your hands dirty,â Max said from the kitchen. âAlso, I saw cookies in the supplies. Whereâd they get stashed?â
Emiko took a step towards him. He was the shipâs engineerâa role sheâd always pictured taking on, especially since sheâd left Indigo Station. If there really was a place for her on this ship, she should make sure she could be useful.
âTheyâre in the top right cupboard,â she said.
He opened that cupboard, and a box of cookies fell out and hit him on the head. âAh, excellent!â He picked up the package and turned towards her without bothering to close the cupboard door.
He met her gaze and raised an eyebrow. âSo, are you coming with me or what?â
âSure,â she said.
With a curt nod, Max left the common room and headed aft. Emiko followed.
